Featured below is a nice example of impressive antique Japanese compass made in 1800’s in Meiji Period. The compass is made of lacquered wood with a nice dial,  and a compass needle in a form of an arrow. The compass is surrounded by a lacquered ring with 12 Chinese characters (directions of the Earthly Branches). The signature of the maker is present on the compass cover.  A few chips are present around the glass cover. The size is bigger than the average compass: diameter 90 mm and height 50 mm.
