A scarce example of an unusually big brass and enamel Qing Dynasty table sundial most likely made around 1800's by a Chinese maker from Canton following western design for Dutch Est India Company. The sundial is well ornate with colorful glass stones and silver color hour dial. The wonderful compass has a well ornate brass and stone bezel and a white enamel dial with red cardinal points. At the Nord side of the plate a well ornate string gnomon support, set for latitudes 30 and 35.
This nice setting has the leveling screws ending with 3 wonderful red color glass rocks, a nicely decorated brass bubble level, a hinged gnomon support and a nice enamel face compass. The dimension is big for this kind of instrument 6 1/4 inches x 4 1/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches . The device has most of the parts present and has a nice patina. Noted that the gnomon string, the plumb bob and two of the screws are a latter addition.
Excellent display item!!!
