The board was designed to be strapped to the arm of cavalry man or a aircraft pilot. The user was twisting  the  board on their arm to align the compass for taking bearings, and the sketch was made on a paper roll which was attached and wound around one of the side rollers. This type of  sketching boards were widely used during WW1 by calvary, US Signal Army Corps , artillery and and later by pilots and early aviation explorers to make sketches of enemy positions and trenches or other topographical features. This board in particular has almost all the components in place (working compass, zigzag brass sliding ruler, brass rolling rods for attaching the paper and mahogany wood board and is missing the just the leather strap on the back. Dimensions : 10 3\/4 inches  x  9 inches  x  1 1\/2 inches.
