SOLD Featured below is a rare example of genuine small octant used by explorers for navigation on the sea. This is an excellent brass 8 1/2 inch radius brass made by Cousens & Son Opticians & Nautical Instrument Manufacturers Wind Street Swansea in the mid 1800’s. The device has most of the parts in place: a bone scale divided 0-125, brass index arm with bone vernier, tangent-screw with clamp, two small adjusting tools, two sighting telescopes, one with a pinhole sight and one with two lenses and a red filer, four sun shades, three horizon shades, one index and one horizon mirror, and a strong wooden handle and a nice mahogany dovetail case. The scale has some wear and tear at the ends.
The device will make an excellent addition to your collection of early navigational instruments.
