Excellent example of an early aviation altimeter Barograph made by Schneider Brothers Instrument Company from New Jersey in 1920's-1930's most likely for United States Army Air Corps or other early Aviation Pioneers. What makes this device in particular so rare is using carbon black as a recording medium that records pressure changes on a smoked (carbon-blacked) foil, rather than using ink. A metallic stylus scrapes away the soot to create a precise, high-contrast trace. The device still has the original flight recording marks from that era (a seal was locking the square aluminum case (the device was opened recently by mistake), on the top and side of the case are the labels with the names of the pilots who did the last flight test. The interior of the device incorporates an aneroid movement with two capsules and works up to 11000 feet. The 12 hour mechanical clock movement has a nice cylinder platform escapement and a lightweight aluminum body. The aluminum case has 4 hooks for hanging on the top to damp the vibration produced by the plane. The barograph is in very good condition with some wear and tear due to the age. Dimensions: 6 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches ” x 4 1/2 inches. Schneider Brothers Company was an early supplier of navigational and weather instruments for for United States Army Air Service and later United States Army Air Corps in early 1900's.
Scarce example of early aviation history!
